  1. 1942-1970. US rock guitarist, songwriter, and
  2. singer, legendary for his virtuoso
  3. experimental technique and flamboyance.
  4. Hendrix moved to the UK 1966 and formed a
  5. trio, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, which
  6. produced hit singles with their first
  7. recorded songs (`Hey Joe' and `Purple Haze',
  8. both 1967), and attracted notice in the USA
  9. when Hendrix burned his guitar at the 1967
  10. Monterey Pop Festival. His performance at the
  11. 1969 Woodstock festival is recorded in the
  12. celebrated film Woodstock. The group
  13. disbanded early 1969 after three albums;
  14. Hendrix continued to record and occasionally
  15. perform until his death the following year.
  16. He greatly expanded the vocabulary of the
  17. electric guitar and influenced both rock and
  18. jazz musicians.
